Today on Menu: Panettone or Other Christmas sweets
Time to start thinking about how best to spend peaceful holidays, for all that is possible.
Time for The Blue Drop Cafè to focus on days full of food and sweets, among the most identifying of the year. When a food identifies a period, a holiday.
The problem is knowing how to choose.
So as the first Christmas-inspired TBD Café I ask you a very difficult question:
Panettone or all the other desserts of the Christmas tradition? Which could be “pandoro”, gingerbread cookies, pudding, chocolate cakes, “struffoli”, Zelten, gingerbread, candy canes etc…
I understand that it is a bit difficult to decide, also because the variety of Christmas sweets is immense. Everywhere in the world.
The real question, inherent in these paintings, is whether you are more for a tradition rooted within a culinary symbol or if you like to vary, explore new frontiers of cuisine?
In Eugenio De Giacomi’s work, “Still life with sweets and lemons” we find a very rare representation of a panettone, together with other spongy sweets and biscuits.
Although the scene is not punctiliously Christmas, the presence of Panettone makes us immediately expand the image to a home environment where perhaps there is also a set table, a lit fireplace or a lighted tree.
The work is cloaked in a warm light and a muffled atmosphere; the yield is excellent, especially in the different pastas that make up the desserts (sponge cake, puff pastry, brioche)
Luigi Monteverde, a Swiss painter compared to Raphael for the meticulous and very fine refinement of his details, especially in capturing the details of light on the various types of food.
In this scene what catches the eye is the incredible variety of delights found on the table: the fineness of the powdered sugar to the density of the syrup in the peach jar and all the candy in the glass jar.
Even this, as a scene, could easily be a snapshot of a house in which it has been made available to some impatient children.
So: Panettone or Other Christmas sweets?
