Art is something that, whether we like it or not, is tied to the hands.
Even a form of digital art must necessarily pass through typing.
This is why I still love those who make art with the care of their hands. As in this necklace.
One small window on a peaceful and uncontaminated world, towards a much loved country.
A real painting placed on a small round canvas and this canvas made of kimono silk, the traditional Japanese dress.
Some fragments of someone’s dress that has come down to us and transformed into an object of beauty.
The word kimono means dress but its ideograms literally mean “thing to wear” (着 物). Which also goes without saying for a necklace.
This landscape contained in the series takes up the tradition of the tomesode (which would be formal kimonos used by married women) with a landscape on the bottom (sansui).
Mountain range in the background is clearly observed, with the flowering cherry tree used as a theatrical backdrop to delimit the irregular shape of the small canvas.
The detail of the lantern is very special. In Japanese folklore, it has many meanings: enlightenment of the mind, inspiration, openness to the words of the sages and spirituality. And inside a temple, also a safe place for the souls of the guiding spirits.
Sansui was designed to show a complete world at a glance.
The presence of cherry branches is not surprising, since it is considered a symbol of the awakening of the Japanese spring. In truth, seeing it on kimonos is a tradition of more recent times, as a symbol of spring was very often used wisteria, whose flowering is more lasting and whose presence was suitable for the clothes of the period.
Why write about this? Who’s the Floating World Girl?
If it is true that on this blog we dedicate ourselves to art mixed with other forms of inspiration that start from psychological suggestions, then the theme was there. An art form that you see and appreciate with your eyes but also that you do and touch with your hands. A piece of art that encloses a world but which by assonance can also enclose its own.
Which caresses the idea of what your world could be. A world where shapes are defined and but are not essential. Where change is accepted and where every element, even the smallest, has its own meaning. As in the small round canvas. Where the details exist but are not fixed. They are impalpable and fluctuate.
Where the search for one’s own dimension is called 生 き 甲 斐 and it is something we can achieve every day.
Starting with the hands. I am, therefore, the Floating World Girl.
And my world is made up of drops. Blue.
